Hilda L. Solis Environmental Justice Center
At Puente Hills Regional Park
Project Description
The Hilda L. Solis Environmental Justice Center represents a landmark transformation of the former Puente Hills Landfill into a regenerative community asset for Los Angeles County. Serving as the catalyst for the new Puente Hills Regional Park, this facility is dedicated to education, advocacy, and healing for the surrounding San Gabriel Valley communities.
Designed by HDR to achieve LEED Gold certification and Net Zero energy performance, the center is more than just a building; it is a symbol of resilience. The structure itself embodies these values through the use of sustainable mass timber, which significantly reduces the project’s embodied carbon footprint while creating a warm, biophilic environment that welcomes visitors to learn about environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Services Provided
In partnership with Mass Timber contractor Timberlab, our team played a critical role in bringing this sustainable vision to reality. We provided the Timber Model, worked closely with Steel and CMU vendors to coordinate beam extents and connection details, managed digital assets to align with contract documents, and created final Shop Drawings and Production Files to Timberlab ensuring the successful delivery of the center’s complex timber framework.
This collaboration highlights our commitment to advancing the use of mass timber in public infrastructure, demonstrating how innovative construction methods can support both environmental goals and community equity.
